Dojo
Etiquette
1. The dojo is a family. When beginning, you are the youngest member of the
family.
2. The bow is a show of respect or it can be a greeting similar to a handshake.
· Bow when entering or leaving the dojo floor. · Bow to any blackbelt when he/she
enters the floor for the first time in gi. · Bow to a partner before and after
any match or activity. · Bow after a sensei gives any personal instruction (also
stand at attention or at 'at ease' when being instructed.
3. Rank is neither a privilege nor an honor. It is a symbol of accomplishment;
physical, mental, or of the spirit. Never ask to be promoted or tested. Sensei
will tell you when that's appropriate.
4. Teachers are referred to as sensei. Green and Brown belts, when teaching
are referred to as sempai.
5. All students and teachers will treat each other with respect, regardless
of gender, race, age, religion, or rank.
6. Don't ask to learn something new Learn to ask something new.
Dojo Policies
1. The dojo is a place of training and growth, not competition and conflict.
2. All members are of equal value and all have much to share.
3. Relevant questions are always welcome.
4. Never criticize other students or challenge a sensei.
5. Karate is for defense only. It should never be used to start violence.
6. The goal of study is change. Whether you seek a change in knowledge or in
circumstance you should never forget that nothing stays the same. (except God)
